If you're looking for a beginner-friendly place to get out on the water, Huntington Harbour should be at the top of your list.

If you're looking for a beginner-friendly place to get out on the water, Huntington Harbour should be at the top of your list. At the northern point of Huntington Beach and right next to Sunset Beach, the Harbour is a calm, scenic spot ideal for stand up paddle boarding and kayaking for beginners, families, large groups, or anyone who wants a relaxing experience on the water.

Everyday California is located just steps from Huntington Harbour’s canal entrance, and we offer affordable stand up paddle board and kayak rentals year-round. Here’s everything you need to know before heading out.

Why Huntington Harbour is Perfect for Beginner Kayakers and Stand Up Paddle Boarders

Unlike open water kayaking or stand up paddle boarding in the ocean, Huntington Harbour is a network of quiet residential canals protected from wind and waves. Here’s why it’s a great spot:

  • Calm, flat water makes balancing on a stand up paddle board easier, and keeps your kayak steady.

  • Sheltered canals protect you from strong winds and swells, so you can paddle at your own pace without fighting currents or dodging waves.

  • Scenic views of waterfront homes, small beaches and parks, and boat-lined docks.

Whether you’re paddling solo, with a group of friends, or taking the kids out for a spin, the Harbour gives you a peaceful, beginner-friendly setting to enjoy.

Paddle Routes in Huntington Harbour

While there’s no single “right” way to paddle through Huntington Harbour, there are a few recommended stops and loops.

Huntington Harbour Landmarks:

  • Seabridge Park: This small neighborhood park is nestled in between homes in the harbour, and has a shallow beach entrance with no waves, picnic tables and park benches, a playground, and restroom facilities.

  • Trinidad Park: Tucked within the canals, Trinidad park is one of the smaller parks to paddle by in the canal, and has a small kids playground and sandy beach area.

  • Humboldt Park: This park is a small sandy shorefront situated between homes, which features a roped off swimming area and a launching point for kayaks and paddleboards in a quiet area of the canal.

  • Davenport Beach: Also known as “Mother’s Beach”, this beach has a shallow area for swimming and kayak and paddle board launches. Davenport is a popular, mellow location amongst locals living in and around Huntington Harbour.

Quick Tips for First-Time Paddlers

Wear sunscreen and a hat - there’s not much shade on the water.

Strap your phone in a waterproof pouch (especially if you want photos).

Life jackets are required, and we’ll provide them for free.

While paddling through the harbour, it’s important to remember to stay at least 20 feet (about 2 paddle lengths) away from all boats and private docks to avoid accidents.
