Has learning to surf been your dream? It’s a good one to have, and the calm surf in La Jolla makes it one of the greatest spots in San Diego for surfers of all skill levels to learn to surf.

Our surf school is located in the beautiful La Jolla Shores (15-minutes north of downtown San Diego), Everyday California offers year-round surf lessons to people of all skill levels ages 5 and up. Whether your goal is to learn to surf and stand up on a board for the first time, or to sharpen your wave riding skills, Everyday California has got you covered. Our instructors respect each student’s choice regarding his or her level of participation in the lesson, and comfort in the water.

While having fun riding waves is our passion, your safety is our priority. You’ll have fun learning how to surf in a safe environment under the guidance of experienced surf instructors, who will teach you the fundamentals of paddling out and standing up on a board on land, before heading out into the water.

La Jolla Surf Lessons

Never been on a surfboard? No worries! Our experienced instructors will teach you the fundamentals of surfing on land before heading into the water with your group surf lesson, with a ratio of 1 instructor to no more than 5 students per lesson.

We provide fun surf lessons for San Diego residents and vacationers all over the world. No experience necessary, all equipment provided.

Every surf lesson will include the necessary equipment needed for success, including a rashguard, and a quality soft-top surfboard. Lessons are 90 minutes long and packed with informative, hands-on training taught by experienced, Water Safety Certified, CPR, and First Aid certified professionals. We’ll have you on a board and smiling in no time!

Want to keep shredding after your surf lesson? We know firsthand how fun surfing is, so we give all students the option to keep their rental equipment for an additional hour after their surf lesson. Like any sport, practice makes perfect, so we encourage some extra water time to hone your new skills. Whether it’s right after the lesson is done, or a week from your lesson, let us know when you’d like to head out into the surf for that extra hour.

La Jolla Private Surf Lessons

New to surfing, or just want a refresher? No problem! Our experienced instructors will teach you the fundamentals of surfing and ocean safety on land, before heading into the water to catch some waves with one-on-one surf instruction, tailored to your skill level! Continually voted one of the best spots for beginner and intermediate surfers in San Diego, the calm waters of La Jolla Shores are an ideal place to learn how to surf in a fun, yet safe environment.

Our position is that the best surfer in the lineup is the person who is having the most fun. Of course, it’s important to know what you're doing and how to be safe, and that's the value of a lesson.

During your private surf lesson, basic fundamental skills like popping up, paddling, and learning the correct way to fall will be taught. For those more advanced surfers looking to move up a level, you can expect to practice wave selection, line up positioning, and sharing the stoke!

Pro Tips for your Surf Lesson

Get a Good Nights Rest: Adequate sleep ensures optimal physical and mental readiness, enhancing your ability to focus and learn during your lesson.

Eat a Healthy Breakfast: A nutritious breakfast provides the energy and stamina needed for the physical demands of surfing and playing in the waves.

Sun Protection: The wetsuit and rashguard will help prevent a sunburn, but exposed skin on your face, ears, neck and feet will need some good sunscreen to shield your skin from the harmful UV rays.

Stay Hydrated: Proper hydration is essential for maintaining overall well-being and preventing fatigue, allowing you to stay alert and responsive throughout the lesson.

Show Up Early: Arrive early to your lesson, and let us take care of everything else. Traffic and parking can be challenging in Southern California beach communities, so save yourself the frustration and leave early.

Warm Up: Engaging in a thorough warm-up routine prepares your muscles and joints which helps reduce the risk of injury and enhances your ability to ride some waves.

Attitude and Effort: Only you can control this. Everyone learns new skills at their own pace, and that’s ok. Be patient with yourself, trust the process, and most of all, have fun!

San Diego Surf Lessons FAQ

Where will we be surfing?

Everyday California has a designated surf site that has been assigned by the City of San Diego. It's about a 7 minute walk north from the La Jolla Shores Boat Launch. Surf instructors will be escorting you to our surf site.

If I book a Group Lesson, how many other people will be in my group?

On average, the group sizes are around 2-3 people. The most amount of people that would be added to a group surf lesson is 5.

Do I have to know how to swim to participate in the lesson?

It’s highly recommended that you know the basics of swimming before attempting to surf. Surfing with a life jacket on can be challenging. If you do not know how to swim but would still like to go on an ocean adventure, we suggest booking a kayak tour instead of a surf lesson.

What is the minimum age requirement for surf lessons?

Everyday California surf lessons are for ages 5+.

Are there any rules or regulations?

We kayak in a Marine Protected Area, so nothing can be taken but photos. We will paddle and snorkel with sea life, and take direction from The Marine Protection Act of 1972.

Where do we keep our stuff?

We have lockers available for rent (they're $6) if you want to leave your stuff behind. If you don’t want to rent a locker we recommend keeping your valuables in your car.

Where should I park?

There is plenty of parking in the residential streets surrounding our shop where you can park all day. Do not park in the lot adjacent to our shop: we don't own it, so if you park there you run the risk of being towed. We also do not recommend parking in a 90 minute commercial zone, as you will be here longer than that and will run the risk of getting ticketed.

What is included in a Surf Lesson?

Each Group and Private Surf Lesson includes a surf instructor, surfboard, surf leash, and a rashguard. Wetsuits are always available to rent for $15.
