KAYAK & SNORKEL TOURS AND RENTALS
Frequently Asked Questions: (FAQ)
What do I wear?
We recommend wearing a swim suit / bathing suit. Depending on the temperature of the water and how much wind is present, we highly recommend a wetsuit. Bring your own if you have one or you can rent one from us for $10.
Where do we keep our stuff?
We have lockers available for rent. ($3 for a small locker and $5 for a large locker) If you do not wish to rent a locker we recommend keeping your valuables in your car; we can hold onto your keys for you.
Will I be in a single or double kayak?
Everyone will be in a double kayak unless you specifically purchased a single kayak. If you have vouchers, you will be in a double kayak.
Are we going into the caves?
We can only determine that once we are actually in front of the caves. There are several factors our experienced guides must take into consideration, namely safety. Your safety is our number one priority.
What if I do not know how to swim? Am I able to do this?
Yes, absolutely! We have had tons of people who have never kayaked before, never seen the ocean, do not know how to swim and have had amazing experiences. Everyone is required to wear a life jacket and helmet and are going out with an experienced guide who will ensure everyone has a safe, fun, and memorable experience. This is a great activity for people of all ages.
Will I get wet?
Yes, you are going to be getting wet! Which is part of the fun. All of our operations take place in the majestic La Jolla Ecological Reserve in the beautiful Pacific Ocean. The degree to which you will get wet varies day by day with the current conditions of the ocean.
What can I bring with on the tour?
We recommend bringing as little as possible. Feel free to bring a water bottle or a waterproof camera. Do not bring anything that should not get wet. We have an expression at the shop, “If you love it, leave it.”
Where should I park?
Do not park in the lot adjacent to our shop. We do not own it and if you park there, you run the risk of being towed. We also do not recommend parking in a 90 minute commercial zone, as you will be here longer than that and will run the risk of getting ticketed. There is plenty of parking in the residential streets surrounding our shop. You can park there all day.
What is the age restriction?
The city of San Diego, and the San Diego lifeguards, set the age requirement at six years old and older.
What is the weight limit for kayaking?
The weight limit for our kayaks is 425lbs / 193kg.
Where is Everyday California located?
All tours start at our shop which is located at 2243 Avenida De La Playa, La Jolla, California 92037 at La Jolla Shores, one of San Diego’s most popular beaches, north of La Jolla Cove. You’ll find us just down the street from the La Jolla Beach and Tennis Club and Kellogg Park.
Where do Everyday California’s Kayak Tours go?
After meeting up with your guide at our shop, we’ll head down the street to the beach at La Jolla Shores. After some quick safety instructions, you’ll get in your kayak and head out towards La Jolla Cove. All our kayak tours take you through the La Jolla Ecological Reserve to explore the seven La Jolla Sea Caves just north of the La Jolla Cove. Kayaking is the best way to see the famous La Jolla Caves!
Will I find sea life on the tours?
Yes. We’ll see tons of happy animals in their natural habitat! Among the sea life regularly seen on our tours are: Sea Lions, Leopard Sharks, Seals, Cormorants, Pelicans, Sea Gulls, Garibaldi, Dolphins and many other types of fish.
Do I need to be an experienced kayaker?
No! We’ve had everyone from children to 80 year old first time kayakers come out and have a blast on our amazing kayak adventure tours.
Do you do Kayak rentals?
Yes, we do offer standalone kayak rentals but only if you’ve done a tour with us prior.
Is sea kayaking different than other kayaking?
Sea kayaking is the best kind of kayaking there is and the best way to explore La Jolla Shores! Is it different than freshwater kayaking? Sea Kayaking takes place in the beautiful ocean, which has one major difference from freshwater kayaking: Kayak Surfing! When returning to land in a Sea Kayak, you get the opportunity to catch and ride a wave all the way in.
Do we actually kayak inside of the caves?
Safety is our number one priority when kayaking. We’ll determine that when we’re actually in front of the La Jolla Caves. Some days we’re able to kayak in the La Jolla Sea Caves but other days conditions don’t allow for it. Even without going in the caves, you can see many of the caves without going inside and there is still terrific snorkeling just outside of the sea caves!
Who will be taking me on the tour?
One of our experienced and highly trained guides will lead you and your group on the tour. Each guide has extensive knowledge of the La Jolla Ecological Reserve and La Jolla Caves and is trained in water safety, First Aid and CPR.
You can do whale watching in kayaks?
Most people know of whale watching from boats but whale watching from kayaks is the most intimate way to see whales! Our whale watching tours start in November and run through the end of February. We’ll paddle out to meet grey whales on their migration path between the Arctic and Mexico. For many, winter is their favorite time to kayak - Small crowds, no marine layer, 70 degree days and more sea life than any other time of the year!
When are the best times to go on your tours?
The best time to go is whenever you want! Our tours start as early as 9 am depending on the day and the last tour comes back as the sun goes down, again depending on the day and time of year.
How’s the snorkeling in La Jolla?
Snorkeling in the La Jolla Cove and Sea Caves has been rated as one of the top ten snorkeling spots in the world. We’re thrilled to help share San Diego’s best snorkeling spot with visitors and locals all year.

Everyday California offers competitive pricing for La Jolla snorkeling rentals for the La Jolla Cove and surrounding areas.
What kind of kayaks do you use?
Everyday California uses tandem sit on top kayaks because they are safer and more fun!
